Ben M. Chen is a Professor and Chairman of the Department of Mechanical & Automation Engineering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). Before joining CUHK in 2018, he was a Provost's Chair Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the National University of Singapore, where he had worked for 28 years. He also held the position of Assistant Professor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, USA, from 1992 to 1993 and worked as a Software Engineer at South China Computer Corporation, Guangzhou, China, from 1983 to 1986.
Dr Chen is an IEEE Fellow, Fellow of the Academy of Engineering, Singapore, Fellow of the Chinese Association of Automation, and Fellow of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE). He has authored or co-authored hundreds of research articles and ten research monographs in control theory, unmanned systems, and financial market modeling. Additionally, he has served on the editorial boards of several international journals, including Automatica and IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control. He is currently an Editor-in-Chief of Unmanned Systems and an Editor for the International Journal of Robust and Nonlinear Control.
Dr Chen has been engaged in projects related to unmanned systems for more than 20 years, beginning during his time at the National University of Singapore, where he received the Temasek Young Investigator Award from the Ministry of Defence, Singapore, in 2003. His current research focuses on developing embodied intelligent unmanned systems, which include advanced unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), unmanned surface vehicles (USVs), and unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs), along with their integration with LLM-assisted digital twin (DT) technologies for smart city applications. His research team has won many prizes in international unmanned systems competitions, held in China, the Netherlands, Germany, France, and other countries.
Dr. Chen has 10-year experience in building energy efficiency related to the passive design, renewable application and built environment modelling, and has been involved in multiple funding applications including ARC, NSFC, ITF, RIF and consultancy projects with the local government and industry. He published 37 papers in peer-reviewed international journals and coauthored a book in green building and renewable application areas. He has also been awarded the DECRA Fellow in the Australian Research Council and Fulbright Scholar in the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory with a total funding support over 6.5M Hong Kong Dollars. In addition, he acted as the chief secretary in the 10th International Conference on Applied Energy (ICAE 2018) and the editorial board member in Energies and Buildings.
