Abstract :

With advancements in technologies such as renewable energy resources, communications, control and embedded systems, the legacy power grids are being transformed into Smart Grids to provide a promising solution to the ever-increasing demands of power quality, reliability, safety, availability, security, resilience, and environmental friendliness. In densely populated cities such as Hong Kong, the transportation sector is also evolving into the electrification of transportation (e-transportation), where conventional combustion engine vehicles are migrating to Plug-in (Hybrid) Electric vehicles in order to achieve fuel cost reduction, oil independence, and green house footprint elimination. The migration of vehicles from oil sources to electricity sources, or when Smart Grids meet e-Transportations, has created new opportunities and also new challenges in the energy sector.

This seminar will provide a brief overview of Smart Grids and e-Transportation systems, including their promises and challenges. It will also highlight several research projects at ADAC Lab (Advanced Diagnosis, Automation and Control) at North Carolina State University (NCSU), including distributed control technologies and on-line battery modeling related to Smart Grids and e-Transportations. Distributed economic dispatch operations in a Smart Grid environment and a novel adaptive model-based battery SoC on-line estimation in a PHEV will be used as illustrations. The presentation will conclude with a viable road map on using the technologies to provide a promising solution to the challenges, as well as to embrace the opportunities, of an eco-friendly, highly reliable, cost effective, and efficient energy systems when smart grids meet e-transportations.

Biography :

Dr. Mo-Yuen Chow is the founder and the director of the Advanced Diagnosis and Control Laboratory at North Carolina State University. His current research focuses on distributed control and fault management with applications in Smart Grids, PHEVs, batteries, and robotic systems. Dr. Chow has published one book, several book chapters, and over two hundred journal and conference articles related to his research work. He is an IEEE Fellow and the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, and has received the IEEE Region-3 Joseph M. Biedenbach Outstanding Engineering Educator Award, the IEEE ENCS Outstanding Engineering Educator Award, and the IEEE ENCS Service Award. Dr. Chow earned his degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (B.S.); and Cornell University (M. Eng., Ph.D.). Dr. Chow has been with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at North Carolina State University as an Assistant Professor since 1987, an Associate Professor since 1993, and a Professor since 1999. Dr. Chow is a Changjiang Scholar and a Visiting Professor at Zhejiang University.
