Abstract :

The engineering of abiotic nanoscale materials has propelled them into niche biomedical applications. Our research explores the interaction of nanostructures with biological species at and below cellular size scales. In particular, the negligible response of biological tissues to magnetic fields facilitates the use of magnetic nanoparticles for cellular manipulation. We demonstrated cellular uptake of 200-nm-diameter nickel nanowires. Magnetic fields were then used for transportation of cells, hyperthermia, and magnetomotive induction of cell death. Furthermore, unique electrical and mechanical properties of carbon nanotubes suit them for cellular recording. We designed, fabricated, and tested a microelectrode array with an enhanced coating of nanotubes. Vertically aligned nanotubes penetrated the membrane of cultured myocytes. Thirdly, I will present ongoing research to develop a chewable diagnostic for malaria antigens in saliva. The studies presented here demonstrate the versatility of emerging nanotechnologies, and their potential to enable new biomedical tools.

Biography :

Dr. Andrew Fung is a postdoctoral scholar in the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of California, Los Angeles. He received the B.A.Sc Electrical Engineering degree with honours from the University of Waterloo, Canada, in 2002, and the M.S. and Ph.D. Biomedical Engineering degrees from the University of California, Los Angeles, CA, in 2005 and 2010 respectively. Dr. Fung received Canada’s national NSERC postgraduate scholarships in 2003 and 2005.
