Abstract :

An intelligent mobile manipulation robotic system is developed for harvesting tomatoes and other products in Ontario greenhouse farms. The hardware platform includes a mobile manipulator with gripper and scissor for holding the tomato, cutting its branch, and taking it to a basket; a machine vision and image processing for tomato recognition; a user-friendly software suite for intelligent control of robot motion and product handling. This research will develop new and advanced greenhouse technologies in the areas of robotics in controlled environments, imaging systems and in situ and remote sensing in other greenhouse, and mathematical modeling and control algorithms. The activities of this research project include technology development and implementation of the prototype mobile manipulation robotic system with gripper/scissor, CCD camera and other sensors, theoretical analysis and computer simulations, integration of the hardware and intelligent software systems, evaluation and field testing. This research project will create the linkage among researchers, robotics industry and greenhouse industry.

Biography :

Prof. Yang received the B.Sc. degree in engineering physics from Beijing University, China, in 1987, the first of his two M.Sc. degrees in biophysics from Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China, in 1990, the second M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Houston, USA, in 1996, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada, in 1999. He jointed the University of Guelph in Canada as an Assistant Professor in Systems and Computer Engineering in August 1999. Currently he is a Professor and the Director of the Advanced Robotics and Intelligent Systems (ARIS) Laboratory at the University of Guelph. Prof. Yang’s research expertise includes Intelligent Systems, Robotics, Sensors, Multi-sensor Fusion, Intelligent Control and Computational Neuroscience. He has served as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks, the IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics, Part B, and several other international journals. He has involved in the organization of many international conferences. He was a recipient of the 2004-2006 Presidential Distinguished Professor Awards at the University of Guelph, Canada.
