Abstract :

Process-tribology has played an important part in the history of metal forming operations. It has been recognized that tribological problems have been closely related to not only decreasing of friction and enhancement of surface quality but also the success of processes. It can be easily understood that adequate lubricant and sophisticated lubrication techniques are necessary for the development of new forming methods and its application in practice. Recently, environmental issues became an important factor when establishing new production systems, therefore any kind of lubricants and other tribological measures should be compatible with environmental requirements. The increase of magnesium, stainless steel, aluminum alloy and high-strength steel products makes it necessary to promote excelent lubricants, hard coating and high performance of tool steel. While production of micro/meso parts with size 10~0.1 mm becomes necessary, new tribological techniques should be invented. This paper summarizes the present aspects of research in process tribology in macro and micro/meso-scale metal forming.

Biography :

Dr. Kuniaki Dohda obtained the M.E in Mechanical Production Engineering from Toyama University, Japan and the Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at Nagoya University, Japan. He is currently the Director of International Center for Automotive Research and Professor of the Department of Engineering Physics, Electronics & Mechanics at Nagoya Institute of Engineering, Japan. Dr. Dohda’s main research interests are in the interrelated area of metal forming, process tribology, surface engineering and micro/meso manufacturing. Toyota Motor Central Lab., Nippon Steel, Nachi Fujikoshi, Kobe Steel, Sugino Machine and others have supported his work. Dr..Dohda has published over 150 articles in Japanese and International Journals, and supervised many MS and Ph.D. students in these area. Dr. Dohda used to be Chair of the Process Tribology Committee in Japan Society of Technology of Plasticity. He is the past Chair of the Materials and Material Processing Division of Japan Society of Mechanical Engineering. He is Fellow of ASME, JSME and JSTP.
