Abstract :

Owning to their superior properties, such as excellent accuracy, light weight, small size, multiplexability, and immunity to electromagnetic interference, photonic sensors, in particular optic fiber sensors have demonstrated great potentials for the widespread applications to the structural health monitoring, environmental monitoring and bio-chemical detections. Some demonstration projects have shown that the fiber Bragg grating sensors being successfully embedded in aircraft structures and civil engineering works to monitor their performances. Nevertheless, the field deployment and interrogation of those sensors still remain to be challenging for many applications. In particular, the current available sensor systems are generally lab oriented, bulky, heavy and very expensive. For the past few years, we have been working with Defense Research and Development Canada, Carleton University, University of Ottawa and Canadian Food Inspection Agency to tackle the miniaturization issues of photonic sensing systems. In this presentation, we will report our progress in this area.

Biography :

Dr. Gaozhi (George) Xiao received his Ph.D. degree from Loughborough University of Technology (UK) in 1995. Between year 1987 and 2002, he worked in both industries and academics as senior product development engineer, R&D manager, or researchers. In April 2002, he joined the National Research Council of Canada as a Research Officer. His current researches include the development of micro photonic sensing systems for air vehicle structural health monitoring and food pathogen bacteria detection; the development of chemical sensing system for indoor air quality monitoring and flexible electrodes for solar cell and display applications.

Dr. Xiao is currently the associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement, and the steering committee member of IEEE/OSA Journal of Lightwave Technology, and is an adjunct professor in Carleton University in Canada.
