The Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering (MAE) at CUHK is seeking excellent candidates in the following areas:

- robotics and automation;

- systems and control ;

- design and manufacturing, in particular, in areas of 3D printing and CAD.

Applicants should have (i) a PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline; and (ii) a proven record of academic scholarship and high potential for excellence in teaching and research.

The appointees will (a) teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses; (b) develop an externally funded high impact research programme; (c) supervise postgraduate students; and (d) provide service to the department, professional organizations and the community.

Similar to tenure tracked positions at universities in USA, appointments will initially be made on contract basis for up to three years, which, subject to mutual agreement, may lead to longer-term appointment or substantiation later. Outstanding candidates with substantial experience for Professor rank may be considered for substantive appointment forthwith. The exact start date will be negotiated with the successful applicants.

Research Assistant(s) (Ref. No.: MAE-17-Liu1)

We are looking for candidates to work on the design, fabrication and testing of surgical manipulators to be used in the operating theatre.

Applicants should (i) have a Bachelor's degree or above in a related engineering discipline; (ii) be self-motivated and able to work independently; (iii) be willing to explore and learn new things; (iv) demonstrate an effective communication skill with excellent written and spoken English. Hands-on experience in mechanical design, circuit design, prototyping, robot control, programming, equipment testing or other closely related areas would certainly be an advantage. Knowledge in industrial standards, human factors and ergonomics would be a plus.

Appointee(s) will join and work with the medical robotics team lead by Prof. Yunhui Liu, Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering, CUHK. On-site work in local hospitals (or similar) is sometimes necessary.

Appointment will be made on contract basis commencing as soon as possible, renewable subject to mutual agreement.

The Faculty is looking for excellent candidates to fill several positions at assistant professor, associate professors and professors levels with prospect for substantiation in robotics.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong has set up the CUHK T Stone Robotics Institute, as one of the new initiatives, which focuses its primary research on medical and service robotics through collaboration among experts in engineering, medicine and social science. The Institute plans to build collective strength in the robotics areas by recruiting excellent scholars, in particular with the following expertise: (i) surgical robots, (ii) rehabilitation and assistive robots, (iii) medical sensors and robot actuators, (iv) human-robot interactions, and (v) machine/robot intelligence. Excellent candidates in other areas will be considered as well.

Applicants should have (i) a PhD degree; and (ii) a proven track record or demonstrating potential for teaching and research excellence.

Appointments will normally be made on contract basis for one to three years initially commencing January 2017, which, subject to mutual agreement, may lead to longer-term appointment or substantiation later. Applicants should have familiarity and interest in one of the following research areas: (1) vibration assisted machining; (2) direct metal deposition and additive manufacturing; (3) micro-structured surface characterization and applications. Particular engineering skills in (1) mechanical design; (2) electronic circuit design; or (3) data acquisition and signal processing is preferred.

The openings are in the areas of energy and materials. We are developing catalysts and electrocatalysts for applications in hydrogen production via steam or dry reforming, vehicle emissions control, and fuel cells (PEM and solid oxide).

Applicants for Postdoctoral Fellow position should have a PhD degree (BS/MSc degree for Research Assistant) in chemical engineering/materials science and engineering (or related disciplines). Prior experience in catalysis and/or fuel cells will be given favorable consideration.
